- Thursday, Feb. 12: DC Vegan is hosting an event at the Science Club to connect with vegans in the community. You don’t have to be a vegan to go, but, as their website says, you should have an interest in “animal rights” and “a little after-work fun.” Cash bar, 7PM. [DC Vegan Drinks]
- Feb. 14-Feb. 15: The DC International Wine and Food Festival is this weekend, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. More than 1,100 wines will be available for sampling and you’ll get a chance to mingle with DC celebrity chefs. But don’t get too excited — tickets are $85 per day.
- Weekly: It’s free Red Beans and Rice night every Monday at The Red and The Black, with the minimum purchase of two drinks. Monday is Red Beans and Rice night in New Orleans, too! [The Red and The Black]
- DC’s favorite Food Network star Warren Brown is writing a monthly recipe column for Brightest Young Things. Now you can make fancy cupcakes at home without spending an arm and a leg for them at his bakery, CakeLove. [Brightest Young Things]
- Chinatown is adding to its collection of foreign-owned restaurant chains. Wagamama, a noodle shop from Britain, is expected to open later this year. [DCist]
- In celebration of Chinese New Year, Mie N Yu is promoting their Chinese Chef Tasting Menu, a five course dinner for $55. The meal highlights traditional Chinese flavors using local, organic ingredients. An extra $20 gets you cocktail pairings, but at that point, you’ll probably be happy with tap water. [Metro Mix]

Are the vegans going to get naked like PETA?
So long as they define “after work fun” as “veggie banging women with cucumbers” I’m all over it like nasty on wheatgrass.
The red beans and rice ain’t worth the price of two drinks, I’m afraid.
I applaud those people who are compelled to not eat meat. Any ambition at all is a step up from nothing, even if it is just being selective about your diet. Although I must confess that in spite of my support for your endeavor, I eat copious amounts of dead pig every opportunity I get. It tastes fantastic with maple syrup, and the senseless killing will continue unabated.
Beans and rice are awesome too. With a little Italian dressing. I like black beans better than red tho.
As a Vegetable Rights Activist, I plan to counter-event with a big barbecue where we eat those animals which would so ruthlessly denigrate the souls of our beleaguered leafy brethren.
For $85.00 I’d better be getting so shitfaced they’re wheeling me out of there in a wheel barrow.
That’s the point of a wine tasting, right?
After-work fun? Sweet! Cash bar? Come on, meet me halfway here, vegans. I don’t think we should be cruel to animals and whatever, but is not a cash bar at an open-invite party just as bad as torturing animals? Exactly. Reflect upon that.
Wagamama!!!!
This is the BEST place. I’ve eaten at one of the Wagamamas in London and it’s great food and affordable. Where in DC will this be? If they put it in the Maryland suburbs or in town, I may just move in there.
Has a vegan ever been a member of the NRA?
If gawd didn’t intend for us to eat animals, gawd would’na have made ‘em outta meat.
Serolf Divad:
Let’s see…1,100 wines to taste…say, a taste is 1 oz, seems fair…
that’s over 8.5 gallons of wine…
Mr. Shit, meet Mr Face.
Mr. Ass, meet Mr. Barrow
Vegan and ‘fun’ doth not compute. How about Vegan and ‘angry’ or Vegan and ‘Meat Free Kitchen Applicants Only Will be Considered for the Room.’
Lascauxcaveman: BAH! I almost posted the same thing, but you THWARTED MY PLANS.
For $55 you get to taste the Chinese Chef? That is so not vegan.
Lascauxcaveman: Peace and vegetable rights!

trondant: Holy bangers-and-mash, Batman! Steven Fry, Hugh Laurie and OMG, is that Emma Thompson as Miss Money-Sterling? I can’t believe I’ve never seen this before.
A vegan “event”. Help me out here. Does that mean I shouldn’t belly up to the bar and ask for a COCKtail such as a Salty DOG or a BLOODY Mary? And no GRASSHOPPER or BULLFROG? But I can have a Zima surely?
Terry: Wagamama is fucking awesome. I ate there all the time when I lived in London.
Sadly, there’s no Wagamama in here Tucson, so I guess I need to move to DC now. Got a spare couch?
I strongly believe in Animal Rights.
Wrongs: insects, street rats, all bipeds. Possibly excepting delicious grass-fed vegans.
Rights: pigs, cows, chickens, giraffes, alligators, raccoons. Actually, just about anything else.
Just say no to eating Animal Wrongs.
@Rush,
I’m vegan and a member of the NRA. Which makes me like sort sort of double terrorist.
Hey, it’s Wednesday! Real ‘Murkins are going in droves to the new Facebook page, “Wednesday Cocktails with Barack and Michelle” over at http://www.facebook.com/people/Marc-Hussein-Matheson/1403751741#/group.php?gid=49956024894
Y’all come!
Are “animal rights” a particularly perverse species of Republican?
You’ve been wonkabouted!
It’s Wonkabout time!
Aren’t the ads for the fat stomachs a little off-putting on the foodie page?
