  1. Worse THAN, Juli, worse thAn. People who plus events in our nation’s capital (yes, AL) should know better. Spellcheck won’t catch this very common error, it’s up to the individual human mind. Especially if it wants to rule the world.

    Oh, my — that Harper’s essay is hilarious — that’s by James Wood, I assume, unless there’s an actual set of parents who would name their child Colson Whitehead. Here’s one of my favorite bits:

    There it is in all its Bellovian glory, the bluster and bombast! Can you smell it? The musk of a virile sentence drawing blood into itself? It is about to spread the labia of mediocrity and rut with the ineffable.

    I’m still a little puzzled as to why the ineffable has a mediocre labia, though. But I guess if you’ve gotten to third base with the ineffable, you’re not going to be bothered with such things.
